Ítem A Multiple Criteria Decision Making Approach to Designing Teaching Plans in Higher Education(MDPI AG, 2020-12-22) Laguna-Sánchez, Pilar; Palomo, Jesus; de la Fuente-Cabrero, Concepción; de Castro-Pardo, MónicaThe involvement of competences in the teaching–learning planning process in Higher Education is essential for their success in the European Higher Education Area. This study presents a participatory multi-criteria model based on Voting Analytic Hierarchy Process (VAHP) analysis, focusing on the attainment of competences that permits consensus between lecturers and students in the design of teaching plans using two assessments: the assessment of competences by students and the lecturers’ assessment of the contribution of teaching strategies to the attainment of each competence. To validate the methodology, a survey was carried out to determine the preferences of 211 students on the competences of a quantitative subject in several business degrees and a survey of 11 lecturers to assess the contribution of the teaching strategies in the acquisition of each competence. The results show that practical lessons and group work should receive more importance in the teaching plans of the subject Financial Management according to the defined competences, the students’ preferences and the criterion of each lecturer for each teaching strategy. The results show the applicability of the participatory methodology proposed to formally agree on the design of teaching plans in higher education organizations between lecturers and students.Ítem Airbnb research: an analysis in tourism and hospitality journals(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2020-02-11) Andreu, Luisa; Bigne, Enrique; Amaro, Suzanne; Palomo, JesusPurpose – The purpose of this study is to examine Airbnb research using bibliometric methods. Using research performance analysis, this study highlights and provides an updated overview of Airbnb research by revealing patterns in journals, papers and most influential authors and countries. Furthermore, it graphically illustrates how research themes have evolved by mapping a co-word analysis and points out potential trends for future research. Design/methodology/approach – The methodological design for this study involves three phases: the document source selection, the definition of the variables to be analyzed and the bibliometric analysis. A statistical multivariate analysis of all the documents’ characteristics was performed with R software. Furthermore, natural language processing techniques were used to analyze all the abstracts and keywords specified in the 129 selected documents. Findings – Results show the genesis and evolution of publications on Airbnb research, scatter of journals and journals’ characteristics, author and productivity characteristics, geographical distribution of the research and content analysis using keywords. Research limitations/implications – Despite Airbnb having a history of 10 years, research publications only started in 2015. Therefore, the bibliometric study includes papers from 2015 to 2019. One of the main limitations is that papers were selected in October of 2019, before the year was over. However, the latest academic publications (in press and earlycite) were included in the analysis. Originality/value – This study analyzed bibliometric set of laws (Price’s, Lotka’s and Bradford’s) to better understand the patterns of the most relevant scientific production regarding Airbnb in tourism and hospitality journals. Using natural language processing techniques, this study analyzes all the abstracts and keywords specified in the selected documents. Results show the evolution of research topics in four periods: 2015-2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.Ítem Building an Educational Platform Using NLP: A Case Study in Teaching Finance(Verlag der Technischen Universität Graz, 2018-10-28) Montalvo, Soto; Palomo, Jesus; de la Orden, CarmenInformation overload is one of the main challenges in the current educational context, where the Internet has become a major source of information. According to the European Space for Higher Education, students must now be more autonomous and creative, with lecturers being required to provide guidance and supervision. Guiding students to search and read news related to subjects that are being studied in class has proven to be an effective technique in improving motivation, because students appreciate the relevance of the topics being studied in real world examples. However, one of the main drawbacks of this teaching practice is the amount of time that lecturers and students need for searching relevant and useful information on different subjects. The objective of our research is to demonstrate the usefulness of a complementary teaching tool in the traditional educational classroom. It is a new educational platform that combines Artificial Intelligence techniques with the expertise provided by lecturers. It automatically compiles information from different sources and presents only relevant breaking news classified into different subjects and topics. It has been tested on a Finance course, where being continually informed about the latest economic and financial news is an important part of the teaching process, specially for certain key financial concepts. The utility of the platform has been studied by conducting student surveys. The results confirm that using the platform had a positive impact on improving students' motivation and boost the learning processes. This research provides evidence about effectiveness of the new educational complement to traditional teaching methods in classrooms. Also, it demonstrates the improvement on the knowledge transfer within an environment of information overload.Ítem RobustGaSP: Robust Gaussian Stochastic Process Emulation in R(The R Journal, 2019-08) Gu, Mengyang; Palomo, Jesus; Berger, JamesGaussian stochastic process (GaSP) emulation is a powerful tool for approximating computationally intensive computer models. However, estimation of parameters in the GaSP emulator is a challenging task. No closed-form estimator is available and many numerical problems arise with standard estimates, e.g., the maximum likelihood estimator. In this package, we implement a marginal posterior mode estimator, for special priors and parameterizations. This estimation method that meets the robust parameter estimation criteria was discussed in Gu et al. (2018); mathematical reasons are provided therein to explain why robust parameter estimation can greatly improve predictive performance of the emulator. In addition, inert inputs (inputs that almost have no effect on the variability of a function) can be identified from the marginal posterior mode estimation at no extra computational cost. The package also implements the parallel partial Gaussian stochastic process (PP GaSP) emulator (Gu and Berger (2016)) for the scenario where the computer model has multiple outputs on, for example, spatial-temporal coordinates. The package can be operated in a default mode, but also allows numerous user specifications, such as the capability of specifying trend functions and noise terms. Examples are studied herein to highlight the performance of the package in terms of out-of-sample prediction.Ítem Software RobustGaSP: Robust Gaussian Stochastic Process Emulation in R(The Comprehensive R Archive Network, 2022-06-01) Gu, Mengyang; Palomo, Jesus; Berger, JamesSoftware package for R that performs robust parameter estimation and prediction of Gaussian stochastic process emulators. It allows for robust parameter estimation and prediction using Gaussian stochastic process emulator. It also implements the parallel partial Gaussian stochastic process emulator for computer model with massive outputs.Ítem Technology double gender gap in tourism business leadership(Springer, 2020-01-24) Figueroa-Domecq, Cristina; Palomo, Jesus; Flecha-Barrio, Mª Dolores; Segovia-Pérez, MónicaThe evolution of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) continues generating paradigm-shifts in the tourism industry, and the incorporation of gender diversity in the managing bodies of hospitality and tourism firms can become a factor of critical success. Nevertheless, women’s under-representation on decision-making positions in ICT or high-tech organizations (double gender gap) in the tourism industry has been hardly evaluated. The aim of this paper is to extend the understanding of the impact of this double level of discrimination at a vertical and horizontal level. The impact of stereotypes, gender roles and gendered organizations become the theoretical framework on this study. The biggest multi-nationals in the tourism industry were classified according to Eurostat’s definition of high-tech services in three intensive technological levels (High-Tech Knowledge Intensive; Knowledge-Intensive and Less Knowledge-lntensive). The composition of their Board of Directors (BOD) and Management Teams (MT) was analysed, through their annual reports and online public related documents, and evaluated through Content Analysis. Based on a total of 55 tourism related firms, the results confirm the direct relationship between the technological level of the companies and the lower participation of women on MT and BOD. Results also show that Gender Diversity Programs promote women representation on the BOD and that this relation is bi-directional, i.e. more women on BOD imply more gender diversity programs.Ítem The impact of sustainable tourism indicators on destination competitiveness: the European Tourism Indicator System(Routledge, 2021-04-19) Font, Xavier; Torres-Delgado, Anna; Crabolu, Gloria; Palomo, Jesus; Kantenbacher, Joseph; Miller, GrahamWe aimed to evaluate the impact of sustainable tourism indicators on destination competitiveness with reference to the European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS), a scheme funded by the European Commission to address the evidence gap in tourism policy making. To do this, we evaluate the absorptive capacity of destination management organisations (DMOs) to implement and use sustainable tourism indicators to make policy decisions. We provide evidence of how DMOs have acquired knowledge about the importance of sustainable tourism indicators through ETIS, and how they have assimilated it by developing their own systems based on the principles of ETIS. However, we find that the European Commission had unrealistic expectations that DMOs, or their policies, would be transformed as a result of the use of indicators, or that indicators would be exploited to improve tourism sustainability and competitiveness. We contribute to the study of policy science by showing how absorptive capacity can be used to analyse and evaluate policy interventions, despite being a linear rational approach to explaining a complex policy context.Ítem The Role of the News Media in Fighting Corruption Practices: A Case Study of Spain(Routledge, 2021-04-15) Palau, Anna; Palomo, JesusThis article first outlines the conditions in which the media could contribute to creating and maintaining an atmosphere that discourages corruption practices. Second, based on the content analysis of 4361 online news articles, it demonstrates that these conditions are not present in the media coverage of corruption in Spain. The Spanish media do not promote a substantive frame, i.e., a meaningful discussion on the causes, consequences and remedies of corruption. There is a very low correspondence between how corruption is debated in the parliament, where substantive frames predominate, and how it is reported in the media. Furthermore, the media do not promote a pluralistic debate. The main players in corruption related articles are the judiciary and political actors, mainly executive elites and political parties involved in corruption scandals. Even though civil society actors, such as non-governmental organizations, are important for generating public pressure against corrupt practices, the results show that these groups go practically unnoticed in public debates. The findings also show that the dynamics that could help to curb corruption are neither present in the news articles of a news agency, nor in those published in newspapers with different political orientations.
