Abstract
The profound transformations that the Amazon has un- dergone as a result of anthropogenic dynamics in recent years have had a direct and irreversible impact on indigenous peoples. In this chapter I analyze the capacity of indigenous groups to design their future. I focus on the projection of their life plans and the creation of indige- nous guards, their ambiguous relationship with both extractive compa- nies and conservationist policies. My argument is that the applicationof the ecological native is inaccurate, given the constant interaction of indigenous people with the Amazonian environment according to their own relational ontologies, which involve negotiation skills, community articulation, reparative actions, strategic alliances and political creativity.
