Abstract

This research aims to explore the role of social media, mainly Instagram, in influencing women to travel solo. The paper draws from existing literature to define the motivations and constraints women face along those lines. Consequently, the paper presents a twofold analysis. Firstly, a netnographic analysis allows us to understand the implications of user-generated content and its effects on the audience. Secondly, a participatory analysis illustrates personal narratives presenting a travel diary. Results show the capability of influencers to create new motivations and inspiration regarding the tourism industry. Despite the growing relevance of solo female travel, the topic remains under-researched. This work contributes to giving voice to these travellers and acknowledging the effect they create in shaping modern tourism.
