Abstract
Objective: To describe the satisfaction of patients and primary care nurses who completed an intensive, protocol-based follow-up program for patients with a recent myocardial infarction (AMI). Methodology: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted within a quasi-experimental, multicenter, before-and-after study with no control group. 219 patients, aged 40-70 years, diagnosed with AMI were included. 132 completed the program. Fifty-nine nurses from health centers participated. Intensive follow-up was conducted for 12 months with 11 nursing consultations. They used a Cardiovascular Self-Care Workbook as a tool for self-management of cardiovascular disease. Satisfaction was measured at the end of the program using an ad hoc questionnaire with closed and open questions assessing the follow-up protocol and the use of the self-care workbook. Results: he nurses considered the protocol-based follow-up and the care provided to be appropriate (90.1%). More than 85% highly/fairly valued the improvement in the therapeutic relationship. The notebook was very useful and beneficial in supporting patient follow-up (90.1%) and improving self-care adherence. Patients confirmed they were very satisfied (87.8%) with the professionalism and time dedicated. 88.8% increased their self-care knowledge and adherence. 96.9% would recommend the program. Conclusions: Patients and nurses rated appropriate intensive follow-up as soon as possible after an AMI as very positive, as patients perceived an improvement in managing their disease, while nurses observed greater empowerment in cardiovascular self-care.
