Abstract
Visual impairments affect a significant portion of the global population, reducing their quality of life. The development of smart applications for individuals with visual disabilities contributes to enhancing their quality of life and independence. Collaborative efforts between computer science and other scientific disciplines have led to the advancement of intelligent healthcare applications, smart homes, assistive technology, and technologies for haptic and auditory interaction. These apps leverage technologies such as GPS, computer vision, and real-time semantic segmentation to provide real-time navigation, obstacle avoidance, and spatial awareness. They also promote equal access to healthcare services and enable individuals with visual disabilities to participate in educational and occupational activities. Smart lifestyle applications promote the social participation of individuals with visual disabilities by improving accessibility to social networks and event planning. Artificial intelligence can enhance environmental understanding, navigation, and personalized educational support. However, to fully harness the potential benefits of these applications, it is essential to address challenges related to accessibility, awareness, and the competencies of all stakeholders in society.
Finally, evaluating the performance of existing applications is crucial to achieve true inclusion and equal access for all citizens. In this chapter, we focus on the role of Smart City applications for individuals with visual disabilities.
