DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR SIGNAL ACQUISITION IN CERVICAL MOBILITY MEASUREMENTS
(Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, 2024-03-15) Cojocaru Vinaru, Ana
The most common treatment performed by physiotherapists in patients with cervical problems is based on different types of movements and exercises performed to strengthen the muscles surrounding the vertebrae of the cervical area, restore the flexibility of the muscles, release them from tension, and improve the range of mobility. To assess the range of movement (ROM) of a given patient, specific types of exercises need to be evaluated, and the goniometer is routinely used for those measurements, but it does not provide quantitatively precise results. A device was designed to be used in procedures to help recover mobility and proprioception in patients presenting with cervical problems and to assist in the evaluation of the range of movement by obtaining a measure of the motion angle that the patient can reach when performing a specific movement. This end of degree project aims to develop a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for controlling the device in cervical mobility measurements. Existing literature was reviewed in order to identify the limitations of current cervical mobility assessment practices, including issues related to accuracy, efficiency, and patient comfort. Traditional methods often lack precision and reliability and may be uncomfortable for patients. The methodology for the development of the project involved several stages, including specification gathering, electronic design, exterior design of the prototype, and the design and implementation of a graphical user interface (GUI). Electronic components such as a microcontroller and a movement sensor (based on integrated accelerometer and gyroscope) were used, which was necessary for the acquisition of the relative angle of movement of the patient. The GUI was developed using Python¿s Tkinter library. The developed device offers precise measurement, data recording, and monitoring of patient movements, facilitating effective rehabilitation procedures for individuals with cervical issues. The intuitive GUI eliminates the need for programming knowledge for the final user and enhances the overall experience. The device has the potential to contribute by improving patient outcomes and their quality of care. It intends to offer a solution to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and patient experience in clinical practice.
