Pie II et le royaume de la Sicile. Une inconnue traduction espagnole de la réponse du Pape aux ambassadeurs françaises à Mantoue

Abstract

Estudio de la versión española de este discurso papal, realizada en el siglo XVI e inédita hasta ahora, cuyo manuscrito se encuentra en la Real Biblioteca de Madrid. Pío II había reconocido a Fernando de Aragón como soberano de Sicilia -que era feudo de la Iglesia-, en detrimento de las aspiraciones de Renato de Anjou, a quien Francia apoyaba. Los embajadores galos llegados a la reunión de Mantua transmitieron al Pontífice el disgusto de su monarca por tal decisión, y Pío II responde a las acusaciones que le imputaron en la larga alocución aquí estudiada. En su réplica, enumera los muchos servicios prestados por el Papado a la Casa Real Francesa, personificada en la dinastía angevina de Sicilia, en diversos momentos y situaciones a lo largo de la Historia. Y aprovecha la ocasión para testimoniar su propio descontento por la promulgación de la Pragmática Sanción de Bourges, la cual representaba una verdadera afrenta para la dignidad de la Iglesia

The present work deals with the study of the Spanish version of one Papal speech, written in the sixteenth century, whose unpublished msnuscript is in the Royal Library of Madrid. Ferdinand of Aragon has been appointed as King of Sicily -a Papal fief in this time- by Pius the Second against the claims of Renato de Anjou, whom the French Monarchy backed up as the other candidate to the Kingdom of Sicily. On arriving the French ambassadors at Mantua, they all were unable to hide the annoyance of the French King because of the choice of Ferdinand of Aragon. So the Pope Pius began answering the accusations which the French ambassadors had charged with his dynastic policy in Sicily, through a prolonged speech. In this rejoinder, the Pope enumerates the great services done by the Papacy to the French Monarchy, such as the appointment of the Angevin Dynasty to the Kingdom of Sicily all history long, and shows them his own displeasure due to the French King proclaiming the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges, which represented a real disgrace to the dignity of the Catholic Church
