Abstract

Monarchies are a common element in the historical evolution of many European countries, and in recent years they have faced a barrage of criticism from some sectors for being considered an anachronistic institution. However, this claim is questionable. European monarchies, although they do not hold effective power, play an important role in current politics and society as a symbol of stability that represents continuity and tradition in a changing political world. This paper will discuss the permanence of monarchies in Europe for three reasons: their usefulness, compatibility with democracy, and economic viability.
