The article is part of a print monographic issue of **Comunicazionepuntodoc**, a leading Italian peer-reviewed journal in the field of communication sociology, indexed at the highest level (A–B) in areas 11 and 14 by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR). Edited in print, the issue is under the direction of Mario Morcellini (former President of PIC-AIS) and is produced with the support of the Department of Communication and Social Research at Sapienza University of Rome. Its international scientific board includes the foremost scholars of Italian communication sociology, and the volume features contributions from a select group of the country’s leading academics in this discipline. This text appears by invitation of the monograph’s editor, Mario Morcellini.
This text exposes that the current migratory issue and the astonishing emergence of far-right populist parties, is fed by a triple fracture (economic, cultural and political), which comes, in turn, from the institutional abandonment that broad social groups are suffering. Consequently, the text propose to protect the population in these three dimensions, as a remedy to populism and the immigration conflict. Finally, it argues that it is urgent to implement new democratic representative institutions, especially of a stochastic nature, in order to adapt the democratic process to the new challenges of the global society.
