Abstract

The article discusses Spanish press coverage of the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 and 1990. Particular focus is given to coverage of events in Romania and Bulgaria in the newspapers "Abc" and "La Vanguardia". According to the authors, the fall of communism was covered extensively in the Spanish press, with an emphasis on economic and military security issues as well as the global diplomatic consequences of political events. It is suggested that the newspapers usually relied on their own correspondents for reports but sourced photographs through agencies. Details on the role of the national press in political events in Romania and Bulgaria are also presented.
