Abstract

After reviewing some of the theoretical elements that allow us to argue for the existence of public banks and its connection with central banks, in this chapter we analyse the consequences for the Spanish economy of the crises of recent decades (with special emphasis on the pandemic), and we propose a reform of the Spanish public banking system. A dynamic and non-essentialist public banking model to help finance a fairer, solidarity-based, convivial, and equitable post-pandemic economy, capable of facing the coming challenges without giving in to the temptation of promoting neoliberal and financialised economic policies.
