Ítem Discourse analysis from an international relations perspective: the case study of Tucker Carlson’s televised interview with Vladimir Putin(AdResearch, 2024-11-04) Hidalgo-Cobo, Pablo; López-Marcos, Casandra; Puebla-Martínez, BelénThis research examines Putin’s discourse in the Tucker Carlson interview of 6 February 2024 through the lens of international relations theories. The objective is to identify the main topics, themes and arguments put forward by the Russian president in a political discourse within the context of a war. This study outlines the main premises, postulates, and theoretical contributions of prominent American international relations authors, with an emphasis on realism and liberal movements. Exploratory, descriptive and qualitative research methods were employed, based on content and thematic analysis, as part of the discourse analysis. The main themes, statements and keywords of the narrative are identified and systematically compared with the explanations and interpretations of the Ukraine war according to leading theorists. The findings corroborate prior research that indicates a realist ideological substrate in Putin’s discourse. Nevertheless, arguments and premises based on neoliberal theory are also found, as well as the undeniable protagonism of historical and cultural factors in his arguments, suggesting the relevance of history with a nationalist perspective in his narrative.Ítem Fact-checking de los debates electorales: Estudio de caso comparativo de las agencias de verificación españolas(Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y de la Comunicación. Además, se ofrecen explicaciones en profundidad que desbordan la mera verificación.Ítem International scope of European fact-checkers: case study of Spain, France and the UK(Dykinson, 2023-12) Hidalgo-Cobo, Pablo; López-Marcos, Casandra; Puebla-Martínez, BelénDisinformation poses a critical threat to democracies, directly impacting individuals and specific communities. The intertwining factors of social media, political polarization, and recent international conflicts—such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine or the Israel-Hamas conflict—have fuelled the evolution of more sophisticated disinformation techniques. This has heightened social and academic concerns. Journalism has embraced fact-checking as a crucial weapon against the proliferation of fake news (Amorós, 2018). In the current landscape of dwindling trust in the media, verification emerges as a powerful tool for media accountability, offering journalism an opportunity to reclaim its societal significance (Mayoral et al., 2019). This sentiment resonates in the research of Rodríguez Martínez et al. (2021), exploring disinformation and fact-checking platforms, emphasizing collaboration between journalism and communication professionals and technicians armed with tools and algorithms to navigate extensive information (Vizoso et al., 2018). The research aims to determine the geographical focus of fact-checkers in Spain, France, and the UK. This overarching objective encompasses three specific goals: firstly, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the extent of fact-checking activities in these pivotal European countries; secondly, to identify variations among the three nations, particularly in terms of the regions and areas most frequently subject to fact-checking; and finally, to establish a profile for each agency, delineating their scope and geographic concentration. The research adopts a descriptive methodology, leveraging the analysis of multimedia content as the most effective approach for delving into media content (Chaves Montero, 2018). Employing a quantitative approach, each verification undergoes coding based on predefined categories and variables. Two dependent variables are considered: fact-checker (encompassing fourteen fact checkers) and country (encompassing Spain, France, and the U.K.). The independent variables include scope, International Institutions, Other identities, Country, and Region. The selection of fact-checkers adheres to specific criteria: (1) Compliance with IFCN criteria, as transparency standards are mandatory; and (2) operating in the U.K., Spain, and France—countries chosen to represent diverse international perspectives and cultural ties, as well as the three predominant European languages globally. Seventeen fact-checkers across the three countries were identified: four in Spain (EFE Verifica, Maldita, Newtral, and Verificat), four in the U.K. This study examines the use of electoral letters as a propaganda tool during the national elections. The aim is to investigate this type of electoral tool, based on the letters sent by the four major national parties running in the general elections of 23 July 2023 in Spain. The study analyses the differences between the letters and investigates whether the candidates appeal to the main concerns identified by the CIS. To achieve this, a mixed exploratory methodology was used: descriptive-qualitative content analysis and quantitative comparison with the evolution of concerns, according to the CIS during this parliamentary term. The results enabled the identification of common characteristics and highlighted the fact that the missives follow a consistent sequence. Regarding the thematic content, notable differences were observed based on the ideological and political spectrum.
